Reasoning for the Date

In doing some quick research on the basic time period that the five main dinosaur types featured in the movie and the main villian dinosaur type actually lived I estimated a date in the very early Cretaceous would be as close to a date as possible. Like so many dinosaur movies, this one does not keep specific dinosaur types to their own time periods, but lumps the most familiar ones to the majority of people in one single time period.

  • Littlefoot - He is your basic sauropod, more specifically probably Apatosaurus (a.k.a. Brontosaurus). These dinosaurs existed during the Jurassic period (207 mya to 146 mya).

  • Cera - Cera is obviously a Triceratops which actually existed during the late Cretaceous period (70-65 mya).

  • Petrie - A pterosaur, probably a Pteranodon, Petrie's species lived during the late Cretaceous period.

  • Duckie - A hadrosaurid of some type, she would have existed during the early Cretaceous.

  • Spike - This "spike-tail" was actually a baby stegosaurus. His kind lived during the early Jurassic.

  • Sharp tooth - Most people view the sharp-tooth from the movie as a Tyrannosaurus Rex. These dinosaurs lived during the late Cretaceous period (70-65 mya). It could be argued though, that this dinosaur was actually an Allosaurus, a large, meat-eating dinosaur of the Jurassic.

With two of the main characters from the Jurassic, the other three from the Cretaceous, and the main villain's primary interpretation from the Cretaceous, I decided to put their adventures in the early Cretaceous, the only time they could have met according to true historical records.
